Day 4

Sun rises after getting water from Penny Pines Trailhead

I started the day while it was still dark, hoping to take a nap mid-day, then hike later into the night. The heat seems to be more intense earlier in the day now.

After Mount Laguna, most streams are dry, and carrying water for 17-20 mile sections was a necessity.

Just amazing, the layers...

Going up Kwaaymii Point, hoping for some trail magic

I've also noticed some swelling and pain on my left ankle. I may have rolled my ankle without knowing and perhaps some rest is in order.

I decided to have some ramen for lunch since I needed some salt, and I was hungry!

Since there was a small stream before the junction to Sunrise Trailhead, which is a bit off-trail, I decided to load up water here. It's a long dry stretch from this water source, about 20 miles, to Scissors Crossing.

At camp, I saw a lone coyote just passing through. It didn't seem interested in me, just wondering around.

I also discovered some gear failure, including a very important gear which is my ZPacks Arc Blast pack. The rod or frame broke therefore it's not providing that arc, therefore the suspension any longer. I spent the early night thinking, planning and just hoping the next day will be better.
